Books about burnout that will blow your mind

Burnout makes it very difficult to see the options you might have available. And good books allow you to to come up with good ideas to get yourself out of undesirable situation.

Old Zen story about a king

This is a story about a king whose people had grown soft and entitled.

Dissatisfied with this state of affairs he decided to teach them a lesson.

He placed a large stone in the middle of the main road and decided to hide nearby to see how will his people react.

Person after person came to the stone and, unable to pass with their cart, tried to push it away but failed and complained and cursed their fortune and even the king himself.

Until, several days later, a lone peasant came along into town.

He tried to move it but he failed. Just like the rest of the people.

Then he had an idea to take a long branch for leverage.

He pushed as hard as he could and managed to dislodge the massive rock from the road.

But then… beneath the rock, he found a purse full of gold coins with a message:

The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.


Best books about burnout aren’t even written about burnout

Experiencing burnout is a lot like trying to move a huge rock with your bare hands.

You don’t see better options and working harder will get you exhausted and guarantee you zero results.

The worst thing about burnout is the fact that it blocks your mind from thinking clearly.

And you need your mind to be able to get yourself out of the difficult situation in the first place.

It’s a vicious cycle but a good book can help you break it.

Since I experienced a career-ending level of burnout recently, I found these two books gave me many ideas about what to do next and calmed me down significantly.

The second book I can recommend is “How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World” by Harry Browne

This 40 year old book feels like it was written today. And it talks about all the ways we are (falsely) trapped and how to break free.

Once you know how to break free – you get much calmer, stress goes down and your burnout feels easier to manage.

That being said…

Books about burnout can’t help you (on their own)

The only thing I found that reliably fixes burnout is changing your circumstances.

Don’t get me wrong – these books about burnout are excellent for putting things into perspective while you read. And giving you ideas on what you can do to improve your situation.

And if you’re currently in the state of burnout – this is exactly what you need as step one.

Burnout is just a different form of pain. And like any other form of pain – it’s useful.

If your hand hurt like hell, you wouldn’t be googling “how to handle pain better while holding my hand on a hot stove”.


You would seek ways to fix the problem immediately – i.e. remove the hand from the stove. (lol)

That being said – make sure you take care of yourself.

And react in time, before the burnout comes for you.

Another thing that can (temporarily) help is changing your routine. This is because monotony is very destructive and leads to depression. You can change different route when you go to work or pick up the groceries. Changing your wardrobe might also help you feel better as well as changing your hair color.
